Director Robert Long Farewell Statement

March 4, 2025 - It has been the honor of my life to advocate for safer schools, promoting grants for schools to deliver security measures and ensuring students are completely secured in their education facilities. With my time as the Director of this agency coming to an end, I look back at the last few years and the work that we were able to accomplish. My goal at the start of this agency was to promote schools that had the tools necessary to prevent mass school shootings, and other threats against them. 

We advocated for heavier punishments for any person or people that threaten violence, harm or extreme destruction towards any school, educational institution or vocational school. The punishment currently is set by the States, and we worked to get a federally mandated sentence for any court, either state or federal, which requires the minimum of 25 years, with 20 year probationary period. It would also require courts to impose a 200+ foot restraining order protecting schools from said individual. 

As I close out my time leading this great Commission, I thank everyone, from both political parties, from all walks of life, for supporting our work and looking to continue to protecting our nation's schools and students. I look forward to the next chapter of my life and hope that my successor continues the great mission of the National School Safety Commission.
